Designing A Custom Bathroom

There is this cliche that exists when you start to design a home for the first time, the bathrooms get slightly ignored because they are often not looked at as an exciting room to play around with and design. Naturally, a lot of people tend to sink their teeth right into the design and planning of the master bedroom, the kitchens, or even the recreational spaces, all while the bathroom just gets left to turn into “just a bathroom.”

While it makes sense that people would think about some of the more exciting rooms first, you will actually be spending a lot of time in the master bathroom – potentially it is the one place you will start and end almost every one of your days at home. Besides the obvious, the bathroom is where you will get ready for a lot of important events, as well as preparing to tackle your everyday life. As such, it is important that your bathroom gets some love and attention when it comes to the process of designing your home. After all, the home of your dreams should also have the bathroom of your dreams, shouldn’t it? Here are a few things to keep in mind when designing a custom bathroom!

An Efficient Layout

One of the most important things to remember when designing any room, but especially the bathroom of your dreams is this: The room must be functional. It is all well and good to want to have bells and whistles in your bathroom (you should have them!), but they cannot come at the cost of efficiency or functionality.

Within the bathroom, you will be dealing with a lot of things, such as drains, water lines and ventilation stacks. Because of this, it is important to really take your time planning a strategic and beautiful floor plan for your bathroom. There is a lot of room to be creative with bathrooms, but sometimes the space you have can also be limiting. Keep all of this in mind when planning out your home’s layout and budget. Not leaving space in the budget to move things around in the bathroom can result in your needing to settle on a simple, or outdated layout that could leave you feeling cramped.

Keep the Sink in Mind

The sink is often the focal point of your bathroom design. It is the one element that really dictates the feel and tone of your bathroom. The right sink can make your master bath feel elegant, spa-like and stylish. However, there are many, many different styles of sinks available, so it is important that you take time to understand your design needs and your style in order to pick the sink that delivers your vision the best.

Lighting up Your Dream Bathroom

Perhaps one of the most overlooked elements of an overlooked room is the lighting for your master bathroom. This can easily be overlooked when designing your dream home, but the right lighting can also make a world of difference for the room and the functionality of the home. Because the bathroom is the place where you will be getting ready a lot of the time, or taking the time to take care of or pamper yourself, it is important that the mirror in the room has some of the best lighting in the entire home. Good lighting is not just important for making sure you look good in photos, it is vital to help make sure you have an honest assessment of things when getting ready, or taking care of yourself – especially if you will be applying makeup. It is important to have lighting in the bathroom that illuminates your face from above, as well as both sides. Natural light is the best for this, so you may want to look into incorporating windows or skylights to your dream bathroom design.
